APPro54G software for RTL8186-based Access Points

APPro54G includes all tools needed for computer network configuration, administration, and diagnostics. Employing the Linux system ensures much better functionality than typical products available on the market.

Among others, it offers such features as bandwidth management, port filtering or NAT.

APPro54G is a specialized Linux distribution intended for Access Points based on Realtek 8186 chipset. The software is intended for WISPs and it can be installed not olny as efficient base station, but also as flexible client device. APPro54G can be installed on following devices: Ovislink WL5460AP, Planet WAP-4035, Planet WRT414, Planex GW-AP54SP, Dlink DAP-1160 and compatible. For proper operation, the software requires a hardware module installed inside an AP. This product is available both as preinstalled software sold with the device, and as DYI-kit for the devices you already own.

Live demo of APPro54G interface is available at approsoftware.com/demo54g/.

Software features:
  • Linux kernel version 2.4.18;
  • Busybox tools version 1.0.0;
  • Iptables version 1.2.9 (MASQUERADE, SNAT, DNAT, MAC, TTL, iplimit);
  • Iproute2 (HTB, WRR, PRIO, ESFQ);
  • traceroute, ping, arping, tcpdump, and nslookup tools;
  • Bash-compatible shell (SSH/Telnet);
  • available gcc compiler.
Functionality:
  • AP, APC, bridge, and multipoint bridge modes;
  • full routing betweem WLAN/LAN/WAN networks in any configuration;
  • NAT and DHCP available for WLAN and LAN;
  • 2 independent LAN ports that can be configured as LAN or WAN;
  • MAC address cloning;
  • authorized MAC table extended to 64 entries;
  • adjustable transmitter power;
  • packet aggregation in bridge mode;
  • traffic filtering between clients (Intra BSS Traffic);
  • "network neighbourhood" filtering: RPC, etc (NETBIOS Filtering);
  • broadcast traffic filtering;
  • several transmission speeds (Tx Operation Rate);
  • a watchdog that restarts AP in case of lost communication;
  • PPPoE protocol support;
  • PPPoE client on WLAN or WAN interfaces.
Bandwidth management:
  • QoS that utilizes full capabilities of Linux system;
  • bandwidth management for 64 IP or MAC addresses;
  • traffic priorities;
  • bandwidth allocation for selected services (e-mail, Web browsing, P2P and other);
  • selectable queuing algorithms;
  • traffic filtering for addresses without assigned bandwidth.
Security:
  • Static ARP;
  • Firewall/NAT;
  • traffic filtering for unauthorized IP addresses;
  • traffic filtering on selected ports;
  • port forwarding;
  • protection against virus attacks.
Flexibility:
  • software management via Web interface, SSH or telnet;
  • user-defined rules for QoS, NAT, firewall and router configuration;
  • custom software can be installed in /usr/local directory;
  • configuration, system files and user scripts are saved in flash memory.

Performance (TF version):

  • wireless transmission in AP-APC mode, default settings: 18 Mbit/s, 1600 pps, 7 ms ping;
  • eth0 - eth1 bridge: 40 Mbit/s;
  • NAT without Trafic Manager: 33 Mbit/s;
  • NAT with Traffic Manager (16 entries): 22 Mbit/s.

APPro54G enables analysis of network load in different time intervals.

 In router or NAT mode, it is possible to track every client connection, also with such information as address, source and destination ports, and number of bytes transmitted.

14 WiFi channels, Bridge mode, and packet aggregation ensure maximum performance.

Up to 64 WLAN clients, including error statistics that can be used to pinpoint problematic links.

Advanced Site Survey feature also allows to detect devices operating in Bridge mode.

Full routing, also with an unique DHCP client/server and NAT, is available in AP and APC modes, and as for LAN as well as WLAN interfaces.

Static links between MAC and IP addresses allow to reduce set-up time in case of client reinstalling his OS.

Unique port filtering that operates both in router and bridge mode, allows to restrict spreading of viruses.

Thanks to port forwarding, clients behind a NAT still can have full access to services such as p2p, VPN, or voice calls (VoIP).

 Unique QoS feature allows to assign both bandwidth and priorities to selected transmission types.

Traffic Manager enables separate bandwidth settings (uplink, downlink, pps) for each client identified by IP, MAC or IP+MAC addresses.

Full access to Linux system shell via SSH or Telnet.

NOTE: Options available in APPro54G, especially those related to iptables and tc commands, may differ in consecutive software releases.
